Welcome to The Cat Protection & Rescue web page

CAT PROTECTION AND RESCUE is the area's own animal welfare charity. Formed in January 1997 and based in Longframlington, the CPR operates the length and breadth of Coquetdale rescuing sick, stray and homeless cats, nursing them back to health and re-homing them within the Valley.

The Charity has a custom-built Shelter which is always full. Because the CPR is totally dependent on charitable donations, you will find their dedicated volunteers at nearly all of the agricultural shows held in the region. The CPR also holds a series of coffee mornings, raffles and other events throughout the year so do look out for one near you!

Volunteers are always needed, not only to look after the animals in the Shelter, but to provide foster homes, help with maintenance and upkeep, raise funds or simply stand behind the CPR stall at one of the shows. Be warned! Your first day will swell the feet and it is odds-on that it will rain especially for you!

Vet's fees form a large part of the Charity's costs. New arrivals are often injured and need expensive surgery. Only two cats in four years have been so badly injured or so ill that they have had to be put down. Every other sick or hurt animal has been nursed back to health.

All cats and kittens are neutered as soon as they come in, if old enough and well enough. No animals leave unless neutered or spayed.

Cats come to the CPR in a variety of ways. They are dumped on the doorstep. Old people are sometimes forced to give up their only companion because of lack of money or ill health. Sometimes, sadly, the owners die and nobody is prepared to care for the pet which is abandoned and left to look after itself.

The stories are often a despairing comment on human nature. Three kittens were thrown out of a moving car on a major road. Five cats were imprisoned in a cardboard box and left at the side of the Great North Road. All recovered and were roomed.

One mother and a single surviving kitten was rescued from youths who were throwing the family into an incinerator. Another nursing mother was found with her tongue cut out. Cats and kittens have been rescued from under rubble, from boxes which have been nailed down and dumped. Kittens, just days old and still blind, have been nursed by the twelve dedicated CPR volunteers and their auxiliary helpers who feed them every two hours from syringes.

The CPR also take care of feral and semi-wild cats that are wounded or disabled. After nursing, they are returned to where they can be monitored and fed.The Charity is not content just with rescuing animals and trying to find them new homes. An ongoing education programme to advise the public and, especially, young people how to care for animals is an important part of CPR work.
